Directions to Battle of Spokane Falls Event Site:

Location by Mapquest

In general, the event site is about 4 crow-fly miles northwest of the 00-00 Division-Sprague address center of Spokane, west of the Spokane River, in the southwest reach of Riverside State Park, accessed at the 6000 block of Government Way / W Trails Road via the northbound Aubrey L. White Parkway.  Then see Close-In Directions, below.

From the far west side, I-90 eastbound, or if hauling a big trailer.  This avoids all city traffic and all tight turns:

Take Exit 272 (about 8-1/2 miles southwest of city center).  At the top of the off-ramp, turn northwest onto W Medical Lake Hwy (902).  Take it for a very short distance, then look for a right/northeast turn onto W. Geiger Blvd.  Take that for a very short distance and look for a left/north turn onto S. Hayford Road.

Follow S. Hayford Road north to and through the intersection with Highway 2 / W Sunset Hwy.  Beyond Highway 2 you’ll pass a casino complex on your left.  About 1-¾ miles beyond Highway 2 the road bends east and becomes Trails Road.  About a mile past the bend you’ll start a long downhill.  About 3 miles past the bend the road flattens out into a straightaway and you’ll see a yellow traffic sign on the left for a northbound junction with Aubrey L. White Parkway and the entrance to Riverside State Park.  Now see below for Close-in Directions.

Near-Spokane approaches:

All near-Spokane approaches work you onto Government Way northbound, west of Spokane.  Most of these drivers will be approaching Government Way from the east, via (progressively south to north) Sunset Boulevard or Riverside Avenue (both south of the river) or Fort George Wright Drive (north of the river).  Drivers approaching Government Way from the west should be able to orient themselves from the directions below.

Summer road construction in Spokane is a mess.  North/South city passage is very bad.  If south of the river, stay south of the river.  If north of the river, stay north of the river until you work your way west to Northwest Boulevard, then take T.J. Meenach Drive south which becomes Fort George Wright Drive to Government Way.

Both Riverside Avenue and Fort George Wright Drive T into and end at Government Way, from which a right/north turn is then taken, then proceed to the 6000 block of Government Way / W Trails Road to a northbound junction with Aubrey L. White Parkway.  Then see Close-In Directions, below.

More tricky are the Sunset Boulevard approaches to Government Way from the south:

Near-Spokane south approaches, I-90 eastbound for reference:

Take I-90 Exit 280 for the Maple Street Bridge.  The second traffic light from the off-ramp is your left/north turn onto S. Walnut, a northbound one-way couplet that takes you under I-90.  Take the next left/west turn onto W. 4th Avenue.  Stay with it 4 blocks until it passes under a railroad overpass and Ts into W. Sunset Boulevard.  Turn left/southwest onto W. Sunset Boulevard and bear to the right to go over the upcoming bridge and not under it.  The second light should be a right/northwest turn onto S. Government Way.  About 3-1/4 west-bending miles on you’ll see a yellow traffic sign on the right for a northbound junction with Aubrey L. White Parkway and the entrance to Riverside State Park.  Now see below for Close-In Directions.

Near Spokane south approaches, I-90 westbound for reference:

Take I-90 Exit 280B for Lincoln Street, a northbound one-way couplet, and keep working your way into the far left-hand lane.  At the second light from  the off-ramp, turn left/west onto W. 2nd Avenue, which is also one-way.  About ½ mile on you’ll go under a railroad over-pass.  Bend left to transition onto W Sunset Boulevard and bear to the right to go over the upcoming bridge and not under it.  The second light should be a right/northwest turn onto S. Government Way.  About 3-1/4 west-bending miles on you’ll see a yellow traffic sign on the right for a northbound junction with Aubrey L. White Parkway and the entrance to Riverside State Park. See below for Close-In Directions.

Close-In Directions.

At the northbound turn-off from Government Way / Trails Road onto Aubrey L. White Parkway leading into Riverside State Park, proceed north into the park and you will soon see State park signs and maybe event signs.  Follow the paved road 0.2 miles and look on the right-hand side for a brown State park sign, “Welcome to Riverside State Park Equestrian Area,” by a white metal pole gate with the address “N 3402”.  Turn right/west onto a gravel road.  About ½ mile down the road in a flat, clear area will be the Registration awning, with modern camping to the left of it in a modern rest area and re-enactor weekend parking to the right of it in a pasture.

Further directions if needed can be had a Registration.
